How T.R. saved the game of football

American History 10- “How T.R. saved the game of football”
In the early 1900’s football was threatened to be an outlawed sport.  As many as 8 football players died in one year.  Something had to be done.  President Theodore Roosevelt was a lover of sports, including “American Football”.  T.R. founded a group of men who changed the rules of football to make it safer, so that it would not become a banned sport.  These rules are close to the rules we know and love today.

  1. Before TR’s rules there was no _______________, only rushing.
  2. How did this make football less dangerous?

  1. Teams only needed to gain ___ yards instead of 10 for a first down.
  2. How did this rule make the game safer?

  1. Late hits, unnecessary roughness, gang tackling penalties and the concept of _______________ progress were all brought in by TR’s group.
  2. How did this make the game safer?

We watched clips from youtube and explained how TR's rules effected those and ANY play ever in today's game

  1. Explain what TR rules you saw on what plays.
