The Japanese controlled thousands of miles of islands in the Pacific East of Japan. Since the USA was coming from the West, they decided to take some of the islands militarily first! Japan
defends with ___________pilots and their soldiers are taught to NEVER SURRENDER! They also become infamous for torturing and killing POW’s (Prisoner of War). Do you know of examples?
The Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines (1944) was the largest naval battle in history! The Japanese lost too many planes, aircraft carriers and men. This is also a lot closer to Japan. Big Allied Victory!

Note- 25.1 is covered by vocab and skillbuilders sufficiently

American History 10- Chapter 25.2 Notes
1. What “gameplan” did FDR and Churchill choose to stick to in WWII? (defeat who first, concentrate on what? Etc.) (776)

First, create the illusion that you are attacking _________________, but really hold them until the end of the war.  It was figured that they would not surrender as easily as Germany or Italy.  That was correct.
Secondly, attack and conquer the African colonies of Germany and Italy.  They were weaker there than in their homeland.  Also, Africa has a massive coastline, thus it is easier to infiltrate.  This was called Operation ____________________
Third, invade Europe.  Italy can be infiltrated from Tunisia to Sicily and Sicily to Italy.  The best option for invading Hitler's Fortress Europe was through Northern France aka Normandy.  This was called Operation ____________________
Finally, after accepting Italian and German surrender, try to force Japanese surrender. The gameplan is considered very effective.

2.      The USSR lost over 20,000,000 (20 Million) people in WWII.  Half of them were civilians.  The U.S. lost just over 1,000,000.  The U.S. never fought on Russian soil in WWII despite Russia’s pleas.  It was not part of the gameplan for WWII.  During the “Lend-Lease” program however, the U.S. gave the USSR nearly $10 Billion in aid during WWII.  This is far more than aid any other country received.  ____________________ was upset with the US for not fighting in Eastern Europe in WWII and the fact that the USSR did not figure into the US and British game plan.
3. What were the key Russian victories of WWII?
4.      How many men did the Russians lose in each battle?
5. Explain how it is considered that Russia won the battle of Stalingrad (for example) even though they lost 4 times as many men? (777)

6. What were the other key Allied victories?  Explain what each was and write down the date for the battle.

7. What, where and when was the largest sea to land and air to land invasion of history?

8. What was the allied element of surprise during the “D-Day” Normandy invasion? (780)
9.  Why was the element of surprise so important on D-Day, June 6, 1944?  Explain! (780)

10.  Why did the Americans feel it was necessary to land in NAZI controlled France?

11.  Who was the Allied Commander (leading General) in Africa and Europe?
12.  What did he do after WWII?
13.  Who was the U.S. Commander of forces in the Pacific Ocean during WWII?
14.  What was Hitler’s last resort to save Germany?  Explain what he tried to do and the outcome? (782)

15.  What happened to Hitler in 1945?   (783)
