"Saving Private Ryan" Questions

American History 10- “Saving Private Ryan” Questions
Objective: Students will develop an understanding of what lengths the American military went to in order to win WWII.

Directions: Answer the questions from watching the film and through the class discussion.

  1. What type of graveyard is the elderly man in at the beginning of the movie?
  2. Why does the elderly man get emotional?
  3. The movie is a flashback of what happened. Describe and analyze the morale of the soldiers as they approach the battle.
  4. Describe the “Higgins boats” that the used to transport soldiers in order to invade NAZI-occupied .
  5. Why do you think they used that type of vessel to transport troops for invasion?
  6. What happened when the ramps went down?
  7. Describe the beach that the troops invaded.
  8. Describe the NAZI fortress, known as the “Atlantic Wall”, which the Americans eventually penetrated.
  9. Why is this battle so interesting, unusual and important?
  10. What mission were Tom Hanks and his men given once they achieved their intial goal of getting in to NAZI-occupied ?
