American History 10- 25.3 Notes
The Allies swore to only accept “_____________ Surrender”!
May 8, 1945-“__-__ Day”
Allies begin to focus on the war in the _______ while the war in Europe is still raging, but it is the secondary plan (not a backup plan but a slower moving plan…win in first!)
1942- Doolittle’s Raid- An unbelievably destructive “ style” bombing of _______ (the most populated city in the world)
1942- Battle of the Coral Sea- The allies stopped the Japanese advance (towards ) for the first time in the war. It was a 5 day long naval battle.
1942- The Battle of __________- This is the turning point of the Pacific War! The cracked the Japanese code and realized they were going to attack Allied occupied (island of) Midway! Americans destroyed MANY Japanese planes while they were still on their aircraft carriers!
“___________ Hopping”- The Allies decided that they would try to defeat the Japanese on little island after little island that the Japanese controlled. The Japanese controlled thousands of miles of islands in the Pacific East of Japan. Since the USA was coming from the West, they decided to take some of the islands militarily first! Japan
defends with ___________pilots and their soldiers are taught to NEVER SURRENDER! They also become infamous for torturing and killing POW’s (Prisoner of War). Do you know of examples?
The Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines (1944) was the largest naval battle in history! The Japanese lost too many planes, aircraft carriers and men. This is also a lot closer to Japan. Big Allied Victory!
The battle of ___________ (1945) was incredibly bloody. There were 20,700 Japanese on the island and probably 200 survived. More than 6,000 Marines died taking the island. This is where the picture of the soldiers hoisting the American flag is from! (page 788) A huge win for the Allies!
On the island of ___________ (1945), more than 7,600 Americans died and somewhere around 110,000 Japanese died. (They were using Kamikaze techniques a lot here! They were very successful, but they lost too many men doing that as well as being killed by Allied soldiers. USA wins the battle! The Allies get closer and closer to the mainlands (there are 4 major islands) of !
The US and G.B. decide an invasion of would be ridiculous and too life-costing. (Why???)
