American History 10- 30.1 Notes
Directions: Fill in the blanks during the class lecture.  Raise your hand to ask any questions.

            VietnamCambodia and Laos were a colony called __________________ __________________ from the late 1800’s until 1954 (map on page 939).  During __________________ the colonies were in constant political turmoil like the rest of Asia.  After the war, North Vietnamese Communists called the __________________ were led by __________________ (picture and biography on page 937).  His name at birth was __________________, but the one he took and was known by meant __________________.  After the French lost the colony at the battle of __________________, Americans feared Vietnam falling to Communism.  The __________________ is the idea that if you allow countries to fall Communist that many others will.  The __________________ supported South Vietnamese anti-Communist government leader __________________.  Many South Vietnamese wanted to be Communist though, so a strong militia called the __________________ formed with an allegiance to Ho Chi Minh and the Communists.  They wished to form a __________________ Vietnam under a Communist government.

            Many __________________ monks burned themselves alive in protest of the war and Diem (picture on page 940).  The official name of the war became known as the __________________ because war was never formally declared.  __________________ was assassinated by a plot is that to have included the United States, because he was not popular enough compared to the __________________ to win support in South Vietnam.  Further chaos ensued.  The U.S.S. __________________ was torpedoed in the Gulf of __________________ on August 2nd and 4th 1964, but a formal declaration of war did not follow.  President Lyndon __________________ passed the Gulf of Tonkin __________________ with Congressional approval on August 7th, which gave the President broad military powers in the time of crisis.  Many American soldiers were sent to Vietnam because of this.  The __________________ had not declared war.
