Syllabus- American History 10 CP2 2018-2019
Mr. Philip Cook
Website- https://ushistory10cp2.blogspot.com/

Directions: There will be a quiz on this syllabus 9/7 in order for me to know that students comprehend the class setup and rules.  Refer to this syllabus anytime on the website.  Print it out if you want a paper copy.  There is no excuse to not know what the course entails.
    1. Course Description: United States History 10 students will learn and analyze the causes and consequences of the Industrial Revolution and America’s growing role in diplomatic relations.  Other topics of study include the Progressive movement, the New Deal, World Conflicts (1865-Present), the Cold War, the Civil Rights movement, etc.  Students will also engage in a study of economic, social, and political issues of the second half of the twentieth century.  This course covers 1877-Present.
    2. Textbook- “The Americans”- Books are assigned and obligations are $80 if not returned in June in the same condition as issued.  Classroom set is available. Online version is available on blogger also.
    3. My Expectations of the class: I intend to have a great time in the classroom this year, but we will get a lot done.  I will respect every single person in this class and I demand it back.  My policies work, so follow them.
    4. Grading Procedure: GHS Social Studies department guidelines indicate that in 10th grade CP2 summative assessments will count for 50% of the class grade each quarter and 50% will comprise of formative assessments. Summative assessments are unit tests, projects and long form papers. Formative assessments are small papers, homework, short term projects, article summaries, quizzes, participation, binder checks (reflections), bell ringers, entrance tickets or exit tickets
    • Unit Tests- Completed on chromebooks 2-4 times a quarter
    • Homework- Small tasks which contribute to learning completed 10-20 times a quarter (usually key terms and names which I call vocab)
    • Quizzes- Completed on chromebooks 3 or more times a quarter
    • PSA (Primary Source Analysis)- Thesis-based essays which are expected to be MLA format
    • Participation- Grade given at end of term.  I record every time people participate.  We have a lot of discussion. Students are graded for quality and quantity here.
    • Reflections- Submitted and checked on test day at the latest. Students must connect each section and class activity to something in their life, etc.
    1. Projected Course Progression: Midterm- Chapters 12-23.  Final exam- Chapters 24-34
    2. Daily class procedure
      • When the bell rings, be prepared with your notebook, paper, a writing implement, a class textbook and a chromebook.
      • I always follow the forecast as best I can
      • I always follow the agenda on the board
      • Website and my email and other daily information is provided for you on the board
      • I know that college history courses are primarily lecture.  I lecture often, but I will continue to hold many discussions and activities during class time.  Lectures are usually held to 10-15 minutes.  We will watch film clips, listen to music and do simulations and games as well.
      • All of what appears on the test is covered in class notes.  Reading the sections is encouraged.
      • My after school help time is 2:07-2:45 on Wednesday.  I stay by request on other days.  Let me know in advance.
      • The class website is crucial. Like this important document, most documents will be provided for you on the website, but I will NOT print them.  You are always free to print everything on your own and you can request things to be printed at an appropriate time.
      1. Class rules: I follow all school rules, but I also have my own.  Feel free to ask me politely why I have particular rules.  It is usually because it prevents me from being taken advantage of or a student getting away with cutting corners.
      • Chromebook policy- see post
      • Test and quiz policy: Students must make up missed tests or quizzes within the amount of time allotted by the school rules.  If you fail to do so, you will receive a zero for the missed exam.  I try to warn people the first day or two but beyond that it is your responsibility.  Always look at the forecast and keep track of what you need to do.  That is your job, not mine. Make an appointment to take the test or quiz with me the first day you return. The appointment doesn't have to be that day, but at least pick a day that works for all parties. If you fail to ask me first thing the day of the appointment for the test or quiz, you will receive a zero. It is your responsibility to advocate for yourself. I am not going to keep track of everyone's appointments. I will make arrangements for all of my students if they deserve it, but it is their responsibility to carry through with agreed upon arrangements. Tests can be made up in class or after school. If you miss class stuff while making up a test, that was your choice.
      • Truancy (cutting) policy: You will receive a cut for any class that you should be attending.  If you are going to leave school for a legitimate reason, make sure you take the proper steps to be excused from school via the principal’s office.  If you cut class or I determine that you cut class, you will also receive a zero for anything that was done in class that day or due for class that day.  Repeat offenders will see their grade hurt in other ways.  If you are in the nurse’s office or somewhere else, obtain a pass and get it to me.  I will not track you down.  If you are missing from class and are marked present on daily attendance, you will receive a cut even if you are somewhere legitimate.  You will receive a cut if you fail to get me a pass.  Have an authority figure email or call me if there is no pass.  I should no need to initiate the emails or calls.  It is your responsibility to report to me, not the other way around.
      • Late work policy: You will be warned of a project due date at least a week ahead of time because of the forecast.  If you are absent the day of the project being due, you still must get the project in.  Plan ahead!  There is not much homework assigned during a project’s assignment time, so there is no excuse.  Projects or homework late by one day have 11 points deducted and 25 for the second day late.  Make sure you show me everything you did if you were absent.  Before the end of a quarter, I will still accept late work for 75% credit.  If you do not make that deadline, I will not accept the work.  If I get work at all different times, it makes it hard for me to grade that in a timely fashion.
      •  Extra credit is only for students who have done all work.
      • Email me to ask what you missed when absent or just look at the forecast!
      • You must submit assignments which I will put in my folder or submit to turnitin.com. Some assignments will be mandatory to submit on turnitin.com and others can be turned in digitally or on paper. This is to give students choices of how they learn best- digitally or paper and pencil. Only vocabulary assignments will be collected on paper only to avoid academic dishonesty.
        • Keep copies of returned work.  If you really did it, it will have evidence that I checked it, and I can correct it if I made a mistake.  If you do not have it, I will assume you didn’t ever do it. Digitally there is proof anyway.
        • Never turn anything in after the beginning of class.  I will give you a zero.  I will assume you did it in class.  You are allowed to turn things in late for partial credit as mentioned before so if you miss the beginning of class, when I ask for it, do not insult me by trying to turn it in during class.
      • If you need help with a project or following directions, do not wait until the day something is due to ask me questions.  Seek help after school or after class.  See me at an appropriate time.  Do not interrupt class.  It shows that you procrastinated if you wait until something is due to ask a question.  I don't always have time in class.  I have plenty of time to help outside of class. Sometimes we work on things in class when time is allotted. Ask questions then!
      • See me privately if anything is wrong.  I will be very understanding if you communicate with me during time that is not busy.  Also, anything that does not pertain to other students should not be discussed in front of them.
      • There are no assigned seats.  I will only ask you to move if there is a problem. There are classes where I assign seats once they show they are unable to handle sitting where the want to.
      • Keep language appropriate
      • Do not copy anyone’s work, plagiarize or cheat in any way (you will receive a zero). Turnitin.com makes it so that you and I can both see when you copied from another person or from an internet source. Don't even try it.
      • Follow the dress code
      • Put cell phones on silent or vibrate.
      • Do not stand around at the end of the period.  Stay in your seats until the bell rings.
      • Do not speak out without raising your hand. Multiple people talking at once is confusing
      • Do not move the furniture in the room without my permission
      • Do not write on any furniture or leave trash around the room
      • Check the board for your class agenda and check your forecast for the class schedule.
